Common Problems Opossums Cause

Opossums or possums, whatever you call them , are not that big of a nuisance, neither to you nor to your property. They are cute and harmless, rather they are benefical to you and the environment in many ways. They are not that damaging your yards and nurseries, they rarely attack pets or burrow tunnels. But! They might get int your trash cans or your pet food that is left outside and they might chew on vegetables and fruits in your garden and it can be disturbing for you. But they are more gainful to people than harmful as they feed on numerous kinds of ticks, mites, insects, and,  crickets just as on mice and voles.

Diseases that opossums carry

Opossums become hazardous with their capacity to transmit diseases to pets and humans. Known to transmit leptospirosis, tuberculosis, coccidiosis, spotted fever, tularemia, and different diseases, the might pose health risks when they attack urban environments.

Even though it's far-fetched for them to transmit rabies, opossums can carry hurtful germs and pathogens that cause diseases, for example, leptospirosis. Transmitted through urine or other natural excretions from an infected creature, this bacterial disease can affect people and animals.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis,  very much similar to influenza can be transmitted by opossums to people while handling them and their secretions. It can cause kidney damage, meningitis and even death in extreme cases.

Salmonella

This condition is believed to be an outcome of contaminated food but opposums are also the big repositories of these infections. The side effects inclide food poisoning and diarrhea for most people, but young kids and elderly people might develop many other severe symptoms including joint pain and long-term illness.

Tuberculosis

TB can be transmitted to people through contaminated milk, even though it can likewise spread through aerosol droplets from infected dairy cattle. Trackers usually get infected from dealing with infected possums. Human cases are uncommon in developed countries like New Zealand on account of sanitization and safety measures.

Tularemia

Tularemia is an uncommon disease caused by Francisella tularensis microscopic organisms. It is also called hare fever or deer fly fever. The microorganisms can contaminate a wide scope of creatures, possums and transmit the disease to individuals.

Other diseases

While an opossum's low internal temperatures makes it hard for the rabies infection to sustain, they can still carry the disease. One of every 800 opossums are infected with the rabies infection. They have also been known to carry different diseases, for example, toxoplasmosis, opossums can also be pervaded with lice, bugs, ticks, and parasites which each carry many other infectious diseases

Problems caused to properties

Opossums can critically damage the attic and basements of your homes, and the most unbearable is the mess they create and the smell of their feces. urine, and saliva. As wild creatures, opossums will require some stuff to hide and they can get easily settle in the attic and basements.

Preventing access is the best method for controlling harm caused by possums settling in attic holes. Block and seal all entry points safely with sheet metal, wood or wire netting. Make sure you don’t trap a possum inside a hole while sealing it because that will mean endless discomfort and noise.
